The Okavango Delta: An Oasis in the Kalahari
The Okavango Delta in Botswana is one of the few large inland deltas in the world. Every year the river water flows into the dry Kalahari desert and creates a temporary oasis full of life.

From the air, the Okavango Delta looks like a green hand spreading across the brown carpet of the Kalahari. It is one of the most special geographical phenomena on earth.
How the delta works
The water of the Okavango River comes from the Angolan highlands and reaches the delta in Botswana after a journey of more than 1,000 kilometers. Here the water spreads over an area the size of the Netherlands before slowly evaporating.
Wildlife in the delta
The Okavango is home to an impressive diversity. Elephants swim through the canals, hippos laze in the water, and leopards hide in the fig trees. This is also one of the best places in Africa to see wild dogs.
How to visit
The delta is only accessible by boat, mokoro (dugout canoe) or plane. Most lodges are exclusive and pricey — but the experience is incomparable.
