At 5,895 meters, Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest point in Africa. Unlike the Rocky Mountains or the Alps, Kili requires no technical climbing experience — but don't underestimate it.

My route: Lemosho

After a lot of research, I chose the Lemosho route — the longest and therefore the route with the best acclimatization options. 8 days total, with a success rate of over 90%.

The night to the top

At midnight we start the climb to Uhuru Peak. It is -15 degrees and the wind is merciless. Step by step, "pole pole" (slowly slowly in Swahili), we climb up. We reached the top at sunrise. The tears froze on my cheeks.

Tips for your climb

Always choose a longer route (Lemosho or Machame) for better acclimatization. Invest in good mountain boots and a warm sleeping bag. And most importantly, listen to your guide and turn back if you have any doubts.
