Kenya has a varied climate that is highly dependent on the region. Elevation, proximity to the ocean, and seasons all determine when the best time is for your specific interests.

The dry seasons: ideal for safari

The long dry season runs from June to October and is the most popular time for safari. The vegetation is sparse, making wildlife easier to spot. This is also the time of the Great Trek in the Maasai Mara.

The short dry season (January-February) is excellent for baby animals, especially in Amboseli and Maasai Mara. Fewer tourists and cheaper prices are additional benefits.

The rainy seasons: for the adventurers

Kenya is at its greenest during the long rainy season (March-May). Bird lovers love this period — migratory birds are everywhere. Prices are low and camps are almost empty.

Our recommendation

Before the Great Trek: July-October. For a quiet but great safari: January-February. For birdwatching and green photography: April-May. For Mount Kenya climbing: January-February or August-September.
